The Wessex League was founded in 1986 to provide a higher standard of football in and within fifty miles of the 1974 county boundaries of Hampshire and the Isle of Wight. The Hampshire Football Association administered the League until 1990, when it gained control of its own affairs. Since the formation of the League eight clubs have achieved promotion to the Southern League.

It is managed by a committee, which meets monthly consisting of independent officers and club representatives, all elected at the Annual General Meeting and also life members.

The League has three Divisions (Divisions One, Two and Three) of twenty-two clubs each and East and West Combination Divisions each of seventeen clubs and a fourteen club Combination Division Two for Season 2004/2005. These clubs are located in Hampshire,
Isle of Wight, Dorset, Berkshire and Wiltshire and extend to Portland in the west, Newbury to the north, Cowes (Isle of Wight) to the south and Hayling Island to the east. The Dorset Premier Football League will continue as a feeder league to the Sydenhams Wessex League Division Two.

The Wessex League is a member of the Southern League Joint Liaison Committee and a Wessex League Joint Liaison Committee was set up during season 1990/1991.

The League was sponsored during its first three seasons by Medisport and then for many years by Jewson; rival builders’ merchants Sydenhams took over as sponsors at the start of the 2003/2004 season.
